As the owner of Schaefer Pyrotechnics Inc. in Ronks, Kimmel Schaefer Jr. oversees one of the largest fireworks display companies on the East Coast. If you’ve seen fireworks at a ballgame, outdoor concert or Fourth of July event in Central PA within the past half-century, you’ve probably seen a Schaefer production. We talked to the boom-happy businessman – who, incidentally, still has all of his fingers – to learn about what it takes to light up the night safely.

Star Wars footage broadcast on a three-story LED screen, it’s a sight to behold. Like a hulking Imperial freighter, the production is gliding its way into Hershey this month.
