Yoga + Booze: A strange combo thrives in Central PA

Everyone has one thing that seems to wash away the stress and strain of daily life. Some methods of relaxing, though, are more popular than others. Many people seek calmness in a sun salutation. Likewise, quite a few seek it in a cold brew. These two kinds of people might seem to be polar opposites, but, surprisingly, there seems to be quite a bit of overlap lately in Central PA.

Federal Taphouse in Harrisburg has hosted its Detox Retox in the past, where participants did an hour and a half of yoga followed with an hour and a half of beer and socializing in the bar. Similarly, Liquid Hero in York has hosted yoga in its space as well.

This weekend, the Lancaster Barnstormers kick off a new series called Beer & Yoga with The Barnstormers on Saturday. The series is a collaboration with Victory Brewing Co. and includes an hour of yoga taught by Laura Liss, followed up by an hour of sampling Victory’s brews. (You’ve got to register a day in advance to get in the class, so if this sounds up your alley, head on over right now.)

Also in Lancaster, Tellus360 continues its longstanding yoga classes held on the building’s green roof every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. – sure, they don’t necessarily serve beer or mimosas immediately afterward (although that would be a brilliant business move…), but they are a pub bringing yoga into their space. Could this be the start of a new trend in fitness… or brewing? It very well might be.

What is it about alcohol and ashtanga that go so well together? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
