This Week in Movies - 1/28/15

In which our movie guru tells you what he really feels about what’s coming to the silver screen. Check in every Wednesday for the weekend’s releases, or grab a copy of our print edition to see the whole month.

Release date: January 30
Director: Mike Binder
Cast: Kevin Costner, Octavia Spencer, Gillian Jacobs, Andre Holland

Black or White stars Kevin Costner as a widower raising his African-American granddaughter alone and not, as I had hoped, George Wendt as a prickly father complaining about Macaulay Culkin’s loud music. The plot thickens when the girl’s grandmother (Spencer) and biological father (Holland) step in to fight for custody. If this movie doesn’t end with someone grabbing their junk while dancing on the roof of a car, I’m asking for a refund.

Release date: January 30
Director: Dean Israelite
Cast: Jonny Weston, Sofia Black D’Elia, Amy Landecker, Michelle DeFraites

Previously titled Welcome to Yesterday, this Michael Bay-produced movie was originally slated for release last February and had its first trailer debut as far back as December 2013. This found footage-style film follows a group of friends (all those names above you’ve never heard before) as they build a time machine, mess up the future and follow the same arc as every protagonist in a time-travel movie ever. Hello, McFly!?

David Onda is Fly Magazine's movie guy. He is an entertainment writer for a national outlet. He's attended and covered the Academy Awards on several (well, 3) occasions for a national outlet. He once made Quentin Tarantino laugh. He has shared an elevator with Bruce Willis, sat in John Waters' living room and has flown in the same airplane as Joan Rivers.
