JOHN WICK

Release date: October 24
Director: Chad Stahelski
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Bridget Moynahan, Alfie Allen, Ian McShane
Website: johnwickthemovie.com

As of this writing, film nerds at Austin, Texas’ Fantastic Fest have just finished dry-humping their keyboards over this super-bloody action flick in which Keanu Reeves stars as a retired hitman who embarks on one last deadly mission against the Russian mob. Why would he do that? To avenge the murder of his puppy. Yes, seriously. I’m not kidding. Theon Greyjoy kills his puppy.

OUIJA

Release date: October 24
Directors: Stiles White
Cast: Douglas Smith, Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Matthew Settle
Website: ouijamovie.com

Even the most hardened of spiritual cynics would likely agree that playing with a Ouija Board is not worth the diminutive odds of opening a portal to Hell. Unfortunately, the teenage characters in this movie – who use the classic Hasbro “board game” to contact their recently departed friend – are not among those hardened cynics. I’m guessing most of them end up dying.

LAGGIES

Release date: October 24
Director: Lynn Shelton
Cast: Keira Knightley, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sam Rockwell, Ellie Kemper
Website: laggiesthemovie.tumblr.com

Keira Knightley dusts off her American accent for this atrociously titled movie about a 28-year-old woman named Megan (Knightley) who decides to take a week off from her stagnant life following a disastrous high school reunion. To escape her boyfriend, parents and responsibilities, she shacks up with a quirky high school student named Annika (Moretz) and her single father (Rockwell).

ST. VINCENT

Release date: October 24
Director: Theodore Melfi
Cast: Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, Melissa McCarthy, Jaden Lieberher
Website: stvincentfilm.com

Another Toronto Film Festival standout, this movie stars Bill Murray as retired war veteran Vincent, who reluctantly takes a gig babysitting his new next-door neighbor’s (McCarthy) quirky 12-year-old son (Lieberher). While carelessly exposing the boy to his life of drinking, gambling and ogling women at strip clubs, “St.” Vincent eventually warms up to his pint-sized companion.

David Onda is Fly Magazine's movie guy. He is an entertainment writer for a national outlet. He's attended and covered the Academy Awards on several (well, 3) occasions for a national outlet. He once made Quentin Tarantino laugh. He has shared an elevator with Bruce Willis, sat in John Waters' living room and has flown in the same airplane as Joan Rivers.
