This Week in Movies

In which our movie guru tells you what he really feels about what’s coming to the silver screen.

Release date: July 11 UPDATE: Release date pushed to July 25
Director: Rob Reiner
Cast: Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton, Yaya DaCosta, Sterling Jerins

Oren Little (Douglas) is an insufferable a-hole. I’d tell you more, but this movie’s trailer skillfully diverted my attention from Diane Keaton’s dusty visage with the sweet sounds of Hall & Oates. Coincidentally, both Hall & Oates and this film’s director, Rob Reiner, haven’t appealed to an audience under 40 since Reagan was president. Upon second viewing of the trailer, it appears Mr. Little is a cranky old man who is stuck caring for his estranged son’s daughter who might be hard to handle. Like the flame that burns the candle. The candle feeds the flame. Yeah, yeah.

Release date: July 11
Director: Matt Reeves
Cast: Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Kodi Smit-McPhee

If Matthew McConaughey and Josh Lucas didn’t exist, Jason Clarke would be a big star by now. He’s got the kind of face you warm up to after 20 years of seeing him play Irish cops on canceled cable dramas. Finally, Clarke’s day has come. He stars as Malcolm – a survivor of the virus that was unleashed on humanity a decade earlier during the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Malcolm is among the last humans alive who are willing to broker peace between the evolving apes and a vengeful band of survivors lead by a man named Dreyfus (Oldman).

David Onda is Fly Magazine's movie guy. He is an entertainment writer for a national outlet. He's attended and covered the Academy Awards on several (well, 3) occasions for a national outlet. He once made Quentin Tarantino laugh. He has shared an elevator with Bruce Willis, sat in John Waters' living room and has flown in the same airplane as Joan Rivers.
