At this point, there are nearly as many Mountain Goats songs as there are individual words in the dictionary. The ever-prolific John Darnielle can usually be counted on for an album a year or so, and since he’ll be touring in the spring (including a sold-out stop in York), new material is on the way. Well, thanks to some kind-hearted fans, we can celebrate new material much earlier than expected.
Yesterday, on Darnielle’s birthday, he tweeted out a link asking his fans donate to his bowling team which raises funds to keep abortions legal in North Carolina. He set his goal for $4,000 and promised to release a new a cappella song if the goal was met. Not only did fans raise more than $6,000, he pledged another song to the fold. Although the a cappella song will have to wait until Saturday, he graciously released a song from a collection he recorded last year. In true Mountain Goats fashion, the song is about the tragic death of Randy Rhodes while touring with Ozzy Osbourne in the ’80s.
