'The Killing Joke' coming to theaters for one night only

In 1988, famed comic book writer Alan Moore had just finished work on what would later be considered by Time magazine to be one of the major literary works of the 20th century, “Watchmen.” Despite that series’ radical take on the concept of superheroes, Moore’s next project would be a spin on arguably the most quintessential superhero of all time: Batman. Dubbed “The Killing Joke,” the one-shot story changed the framework for Batman stories to this day. Introducing concepts like a definitive Joker origin story, Barbara Gordan’s paralysis and back-to-basics for Batman’s own darker tendencies, the Eisner Award-winning “The Killing Joke” is a far cry from the silly Batman of previous decades.

Now, after decades of waiting, the comic has been adapted to a feature-length animated film. Even more newsworthy is that the twin-lead voices from “Batman: The Animated Series” (long-considered another definitive take on the Caped Crusader), Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, have come back for one last voiceover session for their trademark characters. Unlike DC’s mostly unfortunate live-action film offerings, the comic company’s foray into animated films has been warmly received, especially offerings like “Batman: Gotham Knight” and “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.” However, unlike these films, not only will “The Killing Joke” get its one night to shine in theaters, but it’s also the first R-rated DC Universe film. This will be the first time the animated version of Batman will be on the big screen since 1993’s “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm,” which also starred Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy.

“The Killing Joke” will hit theaters on July 25. Tickets are available here. Below are the Pennsylvania theaters showing the movie, with local theaters highlighted.
