The Best of what's coming and going to Netflix and Hulu

The regular plebes of the world (i.e. you and me, pal) are not privy to the decisions of giant corporations like Netflix and Hulu. Things come and go without much of a say from the people, and even the announcements seem to appear out of thin air and onto our favorite entertainment-based websites. As we inch closer to July, both companies have decided to grace us with their lists of what will soon be entering and exiting our lives. Here’s some of the best things to look forward to.

Star Trek I-VI (Hulu)

First, the bad news: All six of the original Star Trek films are leaving Netflix. Now, the good news: All six of the original Star Trek films are coming to Hulu! Sorry about that tricky move I pulled there. Frankly, most of the movies are pretty bad in comparison to the original television series, which is thankfully still on Netflix. Here’s a helpful ranking of the films in case you should want to watch them:

    1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (duh)
    2. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (that title really spoils the second one, huh?)
    3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (#Haterz be damned)
    4. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    5. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    6. Star Trek V: the Final Frontier (Why oh why couldn’t it be the actual final frontier? And who let William Shatner direct? Oh, right…William Shatner’s contract.)

Mean Girls (Netflix)

It’s hard to believe that “Mean Girls” has been with us for 12 years, but thankfully, unlike a lot of things from 2004, it’s aged gracefully. Tina Fey’s screenplay still crackles, and despite overused jokes that I will not dare repeat or try to make happen, it’s still really funny. That being said, at the exact time you sit down to watch it, the movie will probably be playing on a cable channel at the exact same time.

Don’t Look Now (Hulu)

One of the best British horror films ever created, “Don’t Look Now” is still terrifying because of how little the film lets you know. At the beginning, you find out Donald Sutherland and his wife recently lost a daughter and…that’s about it. Who is the person in the little Red Riding Hood get up? Why is Venice so grim-looking? That sex scene looks so real…oh, it is? Oh…

The Longest Yard (2005) (Netflix)

Unfortunately, this is not the beloved Burt Reynolds original, but the Adam Sandler remake. However, the movie does have three great things going for it:

  1. Thanks to the ongoing slate of Adam Sandler originals being dumped to Netflix, this is instantly now the best movie of his on the streaming service.
  2. This scene was pretty funny at the time.
  3. Where else will you find a movie starring Chris Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin? Exactly.

Wishmaster I-IV (Hulu)

Hey! Did you know there were FOUR Wishmaster films? That makes both of us. Moving on…

The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (Season 3) (Netflix)

After four increasingly long years, Todd Margaret is back. Due simply to how prolific David Cross is, the show has never been terribly popular. Thanks to the unspoken laws of British television, the first two seasons are incredibly short and easy to catch up on. Not to mention how hilarious the whole thing is. Don’t sleep on this season either. Who knows long long it will be until season four?
