For a little over a decade Sunday mornings just didn’t exist for me. For years, I had no desire to emerge from my bedroom until at least noon and often much later. Sleeping was one of my greatest skills in my 20s. Most of the jobs I worked at that time began in the evening, including my favorite job of all – the bellman for the Sands Hotel in Rehoboth, DE. Once I carried luggage for The Shirelles. I remember they were trying to recall Billy Preston’s name and I told them it was Billy Preston. They were good tippers. Those were the days – getting up at noon, hitting the beach, doing my bellman thing for a few hours and then grabbing a stool at the bar.
Eventually, though, I got a real job here at Fly. A real job (hey, just because a huge part of my job involves sampling beers and listening to, and writing about music doesn’t mean it’s not a real job) that begins at 9 a.m. So it started to become natural for me to get up earlier on the weekends. Maybe it was also because I had just turned 30 and that made me realize how fast time goes. At some point I just became more excited to get up and get into whatever I was doing on Saturdays and Sundays.
This summer I’ve been playing a lot of pitch-and-putt golf on Sundays. There’s a beautiful par 3 course in Akron called West View, which is pretty challenging and is almost never crowded. I really should just keep it to myself, but I’ll give it a shout out and risk it becoming slightly more crowded.
This brings me to today’s song – “Noonen” by Thes One of the hip-hop group The People Under the Stairs. “Noonen” is the title track of an EP that Thes released in 2004. The record also includes the tracks “Yacht Club” and “D’Nunzio” and features samples from what is probably the best movie ever made about golf – Caddyshack. “Noonen” is a song about growing up and getting out of bed before noon. It’s about becoming mature while still staying true to yourself. Live moves fast, but as Thes says, “to add more time set the alarm.” Like everything that Thes puts out, “Noonen” is positive, inspiring and fun. How could it not be? It’s got an intro featuring Chevy Chase and an outro with Bill Murray.
Wake up! What are you guys listening to today?
