Sega remembers 1996, announces Sega Mega Drive

When life gets you down, remember that you’re only ever just a few short years away from having your nostalgia commodified into a nice, easy package ripe for repurchasing. Much like the years 1990, 1997 and 2001, Sega is hot on the heels of Nintendo, who recently announced the NES Classic Edition, a miniature Nintendo Entertainment System pre-loaded with¬†30 games. Today, Sega announced the Sega Mega Drive Classic Game System, a-wait for it-miniature system pre-loaded with 80 games. That sure is a lot of games! One of the key differences between the two minis is that the Sega version can actually play¬†those dusty Genesis cartridges that your mom is having a hard time figuring out if you’ll notice that she already threw away years ago.

Sega is known for re-releasing games in compilation form every couple of years (seriously, check this Wiki page just for a list of 20 Sonic-only comps), but this is the first time they’ve put out a physical console to play them on in almost 15 years. So yes, this re-release includes beloved series like Golden Axe, Mortal Kombat and, yes, like five Sonic the Hedgehog games. However, the last three generations of game systems have some sort of compilation with all of these games and more. I recommend “Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection” for the Xbox360 and PS3.

The retro system will be available in the UK in time for Sonic’s 25th birthday in October and will cost around $65. For more information, click here.
