RIP: 5 songs inspired by Muhammad Ali

On Friday, June 3, after being on life support, renowned boxer Muhammad Ali, or Cassius Clay, passed away at 74 from complications spurred by Parkinson’s disease.

From the moment he arrived on the scene, Ali had an influence in music. Friends with Sam Cooke, he released an album of his comedy and a cover of “Stand By Me.” It wasn’t until the mid-1960s when artists began singing about him.

1. “The Greatest Love of All” by George Benson

2. “‘Cassius Love’ vs. ‘Sonny’ Wilson” by The Beach Boys

3. “The Louisville Lip (He’s the Greatest)” by Eddie Curtis

4. “Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)” by Johnny Wakelin

5. “8ieme Round” by Zaire’s Trio Madjesi and Orchestre Sosoliso
