New Music: Black Thought-'Making a Murderer'

As far as popular opinion goes, Will Smith is still the most noteworthy rapper to come out of the great city of Philadelphia (and for that matter, the rest of the Keystone State). For my money, however, that title has been held by The Roots’ illustrious co-founder Black Thought. Unfortunately, Black Thought’s (real name Tariq Trotter) verbal skills are regularly overshadowed by the band’s highly-visible bandleader Questlove and the fact that Trotter’s role on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is fairly minimal.

All that’s about to change with the premier of Trotter’s first real single, “Making a Murderer,” featuring Styles P and produced by 9th Wonder. After nearly 30 years standing in front of a band, it’s looking like Trotter might be finally ready to release a solo album. Black Thought’s album, “The Talented Mr. Trotter,” has been in the works for years, but this could be our first real glimpse into how he might differ from The Roots hivemind. If this track (not related to a certain Netflix series) is any indication, the album is sure to be [Insert “Fire” emoji here]. Check out the track and a few key Black Thought features below.

Kevin Stairiker is a features writer for Fly. He is a graduate of Temple University and enjoys writing in third person. When he isn't writing, he's probably playing guitar for a litany of bands, reading comics or providing well-needed muscle at The Double Deuce.
