Michael Stipe makes rare TV appearance in tribute to David Bowie

Since R.E.M. last said goodbye five years ago, Michael Stipe continues to pop up seemingly at random. Last seen on stage playing covers and R.E.M. rarities while opening for Patti Smith, Stipe made his solo TV debut in a big way last night on The Tonight Show.

He’ll be appearing at this weekend’s massive live tribute to the music of David Bowie with artists ranging from The Roots to the Pixies. Stipe played Bowie’s classic “The Man Who Sold The World” accompanied by a solo piano and his gigantic new wizard beard.
