Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek has a history of confounding covers, whether it was his album of only Modest Mouse covers or his first solo endeavor paying tribute to AC/DC’s Bon Scott. At the end of May, he’ll be releasing a new collection of covers properly-titled “Mark Kozelek Sings Favorites.” The tracklist showcases Kozelek’s esoteric taste in “Favorites,” including takes on Bob Seger’s “Mainstreet,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In The Clowns” and, uh, “O Holy Night.” Collaborators Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Mike Patton (Faith No More) and more are expected to make appearances.
Today, he released a track from the album, a duet on the sweetly saccharine “Something Stupid” with actress Minnie Driver. The song, initially popular for the quasi-incestuous undertones provided by singers Frank and Nancy Sinatra, is delivered over a quiet piano and hushed tones. Frankly, it’s the nicest sounding vocal the usually-gruff Kozelek has given in years. Listen to the tune via his website here.
