Like most federally-mandated holidays, the “true” meaning of Memorial Day is lost on most of modern culture. While it’s right there in the name to memorialize those who have fallen in combat, what separates that from Veteran’s Day on November 11? Over time, the fact that Memorial Day was fixed to the last Monday of May and held the spot as the unofficial start to summer changed the meaning ever so slightly. While we still remember those we lost to wars, it’s also used as an opportunity to convene with family members that we haven’t seen in some time.
