Frozen treats, warm Caribbean vibes
The interior of Calypso is decorated in bright orange and blue hues, with bamboo, images of parrots and palm trees, strings of patio lights and prints depicting exotic destinations. The interior is spacious, with lots of room to move around. Seating options include cozy, high-back benches, table groupings, a tropical bar area and a comfortable couch. And a big-screen TV runs popular retro films like Beach Party, and the sounds of Beach House Radio on Pandora fill this sweet space.
Fourteen rotating frozen treat varieties are available, including premium vanilla and chocolate soft-serve ice cream, sorbets, gelato and a selection of frozen yogurt flavors like Tahitian Vanilla, California Tart, Strawberry Sensation, Cookies and Cream, Old Fashioned Peanut Butter and Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel. Non-fat, non-dairy, gluten-free and sugar-free varieties are always available in the self-serve dispensers.
The toppings bar contains a limitless variety of sweet, salty, soft and crunchy condiments to complete your frozen treat. Among the toppings are cheesecake bites, espresso pillows, granola, fresh fruit, pretzel bites, gummy candy, brownies, cinnamon buns, Nutella and whipped cream.
Judy encourages patrons to begin by placing some treats in the bottom of their cup, followed by the addition of frozen yogurt or ice cream and then a final trip to the toppings bar. Patrons can fill a cup of the frozen treats and toppings for 44¢ per ounce, or they can fill a crunchy waffle cone for $3.50.
Honey Hill Farms – a small dairy in Arkansas – supplies Calypso with frozen treat varieties. “We prefer to partner with small, independent suppliers with a focus on sustainability,” says Judy. “Right down to our biodegradable spoons.”
The products are flavored with real fruit purees, and that means when you fill your cup with Strawberry Sensation, the flavor comes from ripe, red strawberries and not a man-made concoction of strawberry-flavored high fructose corn syrup.
Calypso hosts live music in the back room and plans to feature an artist of the month. Watch for the addition of a cafe menu to include sandwiches, wraps and salads. Coffee, tea and premium bottled sodas are also available, as well as free Wi-Fi.
