Though it’s been in development for some time now (remember that logo contest?), the inaugural Harrisburg Beer Week has been officially announced for April 24-May 2. Given the craft beer savvy brain trust that’s working to put this thing together – craft beer blogger Tierney Pomone of StoutsandStilettos.com (read our profile here); nightlife and entertainment writer Sara Bozich; and Stouts and Stilettos contributors Colleen Nguyen and Chelsie Markel – I’m expecting quite the celebration of the greater Harrisburg region’s beer scene.
Appalachian Brewing Co. is the presenting sponsor and will host a media and sponsor kick-off party in the Abbey Bar at its Harrisburg location on April 24. Harrisburg Beer Week will also wrap up at ABC with a “Little Big Beer Fest” on May 2.
The annual PA Flavor beer and food event takes place at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on April 25, featuring 40 PA breweries alongside restaurants and food providers from across the state.
In addition, participating breweries, bars and restaurants from across the region will host tastings, tap takeovers, pairing dinners, educational classes and panels, brewery tours and more. These events will be added to the Harrisburg Beer Week events page as they are confirmed.
It’s already been posted that Tröegs, Appalachian Brewing Co. and Pizza Boy Brewing Co. are working on a collaboration beer that will be special to the week. Collaboration brews are nothing new in the craft community, but there hasn’t been much of it to date between Central PA’s breweries. Hopefully this will start a chain reaction of sorts and prompt other local brewers to get together and collaborate.
More than just a week of hopped up drinking and dining, the HBW planners have also added a philanthropic aspect to week; proceeds will benefit Harrisburg River Rescue. I don’t know about you, but beer just tastes better when there’s a good cause at play. Right?
