Day 14: Valentino's Cafe in Lancaster

Day 14

Don’t get too down on yourself

if you haven’t heard about Valentino’s Cafe in Lancaster. Sure, it’s been around for 78 years. But, thanks to generations of family at the helm, its maintained a charm – not to mention an unceasing dedication to whipping up some fantastic spaghetti – that has kept a close-knit community of customers and neighbors alike coming back and, perhaps, inadvertently keeping the secret to themselves.

In recent years, however, the fun-loving folks at Valentino’s have made headlines for the longstanding Groundhog’s Day parade – a massive tongue-in-cheek tradition featuring vintage cars, groundhog costumes, parking lot grilling and, of course, a few cold beers.

But with the turn of the season, you don’t have to brave the February chill to enjoy a brew and a bite out-of-doors at Valentino’s. The front porch seating area has tables adorned by beer-branded umbrellas for open table service Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. That’s right – the full menu includes breakfast from 7-10:45 a.m., so you can lap up that crisp morning air before you start your day. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t end your day there, either. And you certainly shouldn’t be surprised if you see some familiar faces hanging out at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s a close-knit community, after all.
