Bubble, bubble: Halloween drinks to die for

You don’t necessarily need a witch’s brew to conjure up some toil and trouble this weekend. An All Hallow’s Eve-themed cocktail will do just fine. There are plenty of spooky mixed drinks out there that seem to fit the bill – but many are just concocted for looks, losing on the taste front (we’re looking at you, every “brain”-themed cocktail, shot, and punch out there). Just because they look weird doesn’t mean they have to taste weird. Fear not: we’re here for you. Mix up these potions at your home Halloween party (or ask for one on your zombie-themed pub crawl) to kick-start the party.

The Black Cat

What you want: Everyone to wonder what in hell you’re drinking.
What you need:

  • a shot of cherry liquor or cherry brandy
  • a shot of Blavod vodka (substitutes are acceptable but will change the drink color)
  • cola
  • cranberry juice
  • a highball glass
  • ice to taste

What you do: Combine your ingredients in the highball glass. Proceed to glower furtively over the rim of the glass and slink around whatever room you might be in with unnerving silence.

Black Widow

What you want: To look effortlessly cool as you sip on a drink that looks dangerous.
What you need:

  • 1 shot black sambuca (alternatively, you could also use Blavod)
  • 1 shot citrus-flavored vodka
  • martini glass
  • one of those fancy mourning hats with the netting on it

What you do: Combine vodka and sambuca in the martini glass. Hide demurely behind your fancy hat. No one suspects anything.

Witch’s Brew

What you want: To cackle while stirring the punch bowl and turn anyone who TPs your car into a newt (they’ll get better!) A note: The other cocktails exist in various forms throughout the internet, and there are many different “Witch’s Brew” cocktails you can find but this one’s pretty clearly sourced here.)
What you need:

  • 1.5 oz coconut tequila
  • 2 oz pineapple-orange juice (or an ounce of each)
  • Half oz blue curacao
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Ice to taste
  • Martini glass
  • Shaker
  • Eye of newt to garnish

What you do: Pour your booze in the shaker and get cracking. Once done, drop the cherry in the martini glass and pour your potion over it.

And one more, for everyone who’s disappointed there’s no gory drinks on the list…

Zombie Brain Shot

What you want: To gross out everyone at the bar and make sure that anti-zombie vaccine really works.
What you need: This one is really more to taste (or, well, sight) than anything else, so it requires a little mixological improv.

  • Peach Schnapps
  • Bailey’s Irish Cream whiskey
  • Grenadine
  • A largeish shot glass
  • A strong stomach

What you do: Pour Schnapps into shot glass until it’s about halfway full. Add the Bailey’s on top – slowly. About 3/4 of the way up, stop. Drop in just a splash of grenadine, and godspeed.
