A lifetime of sandwiches

There are five things everyone needs to live: food, water, air, shelter and sandwiches. Some may argue that the wheel was man’s greatest invention, but the sandwich may just be the high point of civilization. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread (and it would be greater than sliced bread if you didn’t need sliced bread to make a sandwich). Every month until the end of time, we highlight our favorite locally-made sandwiches.

44. Jumbo Lump Crabcake
Lettuce, tomato, spicy remoulade and comes with house-cut fries.

When the cold of winter gets you down, sometimes you need to feel like you’re on vacation in a tropical spot. If you can’t get away, why not try the Jumbo Lump Crabcake sandwich at Lancaster Brewing Company.

Lancaster Brewing Co.
302 N. Plum St., Lancaster

43. Mac’N Meatloaf
Homemade Meatloaf and Mac & Cheese served open faced on Thom’s Rosemary Bread.

We’ve seen all kinds of toppings on sandwiches: fries (sandwiches No. 1, 2, 3, 37), onion straws (sandwiches No. 9, 12), fried egg (sandwich No. 26), fried pickles (sandwich No. 13), and here we have mac & cheese. This is not the first time we have seen this. Mac &
cheese has appeared on three other sandwiches on the list (sandwiches No. 4, 19, 36).
That being said, mac & cheese is always a welcome addition to any sandwich. My only issue with this sandwich – I wish it came with a side of gravy for dipping.

38 W King St., Lancaster
717.559.BUZZ (2899)

42. Rockefeller
Roast beef, provolone cheese, horseradish sauce, lettuce, red onion and tomato on a cheddar roll – made fresh daily.

Grand Central uses Boar’s Head meats and cheeses in their sandwiches. All menu items are available at any time of day, so you could enjoy this sandwich for breakfast, as I did.

Grand Central Bagel Cafe
245 Centerville Road
Lancaster, 717.299.0700

41. Smoked Turkey Melt
Melted pepper jack, avocado and tomato on rustic French bread. Comes with your choice of fries, sweet potato fries or green salad.

The pepper jack cheese gives this sandwich a kick. And just like cheese makes any food better, the avocado does the same to this sandwich.

Characters Pub
38 N. Christian St.
Lancaster, 717.735.7788

40. Nino’s Special
Ham, cheese, salami, capicola, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a sub roll –  made fresh daily.

Nino’s is a family-owned Italian restaurant, and the owners greet customers as if they’re family. The Nino’s regular ’boli is one my favorites. Honestly, everything they make is awesome. But this feature is about sandwiches. Being such a fan of the place, and a regular for nearly 12 years, it was difficult to pick just one sandwich. I finally landed on my go-to, the Nino’s Special.

Nino’s Pizzeria & Ristoranté
361 Comet Dr.,
Millersville, 717.872.4511

39. Italian Sandwich
Fresh, made-to-order baked bread, Romaine lettuce,
Roma tomatoes, provolone, pepperoni, salami, capicola and choice of dressing.

Since the roll is made of pizza dough, this sandwich eats more like a stromboli. It even
comes with marinara sauce and Italian dressing for dipping. You need to try this sandwich.

38. Braised Short Rib Sandwich
Slow roasted, boneless beef short rib with melted mozzarella and
sweet tomato jam served on a pretzel roll.

Boneless beef short ribs on a pretzel roll – this sandwich is incredible. Plus, Dipco is located about a block from the Fly After 5 office, making it very convenient for lunch.
